THE SIGNALING ATM ADAPTATION LAYER (SAAL)

The overall functions of the SAAL can be summarized as follows. SAAL is responsible for the correct transfer of data on a point-to-point ATM connection. One of its primary functions is to relieve the user from any concern for data errors, loss, duplications, or insertions that may occur on the link.

SAAL provides a link monitoring service and “proves” that links are stable and error-free enough to be used (with alignment procedures that deal with testing the link). It can also take a link out of service if it becomes unreliable.

SAAL also provides for flow control procedures and employs mechanisms to insure that two ATM nodes do not create congestion problems with each other.
