INTRODUCTION

This chapter examines the Private Network-Network Interface (PNNI), a protocol published by the ATM Forum. We learn the reason PNNI was developed as well as the PNNI operations. Two aspects of PNNI are described. One deals with route advertising and the other deals with signaling. The former is the main focus of this chapter since this book concentrates on routing protocols.

PNNI is a book unto itself (383 pages). The approach in this chapter is to provide an overview of the protocol, as defined in the ATM Forum's specification [ATMF96],[1] and recommend you obtain this material if you are going to implement and/or maintain a PNNI routing domain.
