IGRP AND EIGRP

As just stated, the IGRP and the EIGRP are routing protocols developed by Cisco and EIGRP has replaced IGRP in many systems. Table 8-1 summarizes the major attributes of these protocols, and will be a convenient reference as we proceed through this discussion.

Table 8-1. Inter-Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP) and Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP)
  • Proprietary protocols from Cisco

  • Distance vector protocols with metrics based on:

    Fixed delay between nodes (D)

    Bandwidth (B)

    Traffic load (L)

Error rate on the path: reliability (R)

Count of the hops on the path to the destination (H)

    The path's MTU

  • Support load balancing across multiple paths to a destination

  • Use triggered updates, split horizon, and holddown

  • EIGRP also has:

    CIDR prefixes
