INTRODUCTION

The chapter explains the operations of the prominent external gateway protocol, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). We start with a look at the major attributes of BGP, and follow with a description of BGP advertising, and the concept of transit and nontransit autonomous systems. The major BGP operations are then analyzed, with examples of BGP's messages. The chapter concludes with a description of the tasks used by the network manager to configure BGP operations between and within autonomous systems.
