SUMMARY

The Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a vector-distance routing protocol. Its routing decisions are based on the number of intermediate hops to the final destination. Its simplicity and ease of use has made it a widely used protocol. RIP was not intended to be deployed in large internets; it was not designed for internets that are physically looped. Its original version created a number of problems, principally relating to long convergence times. These problems have been corrected in the recent versions.
