INTRODUCTION

This chapter explains the operations of the well known distance-vector protocol, the Routing Information Protocol (RIP). We start with a brief history of RIP, and follow with a description of RIP routing tables, and how these routing tables are created. The RIP messages are then analyzed, with examples of RIP version 1 and RIP version 2 messages. RIP advertisements are examined, and the deficiencies of the original RIP are explained, as well as measures taken to overcome some of these deficiencies. The chapter concludes with a description of the tasks used by the network manager to configure RIP operations within an autonomous system.
