LINK STATE PROTOCOLS
The link state protocol is implemented when a router advertises the state of its local interfaces to its neighbor routers. The local interfaces are the physical links attached to the router. The neighbor router can be a router on the same subnetwork, or on the other end of a point-to-point connection. These ideas are shown in Figure 3-6.

Each link interface is assigned a value, also called a metric or a cost. In Figure 3-6, router 1 (R1) is advertising a metric of 2 for interface 1, and a metric of 5 for interface 2.
