Many of the operations described in this chapter are applicable to both bridges and routers. But not all. First, a bridge operates only on LANs and has no concept of autonomous systems, and network addresses. The bridge certainly can be configured to operate a spanning tree, as we shall see in Chapter 4. Routers are even more flexible, and can perform integrated routing and bridging.
