INTRODUCTION

This chapter introduces the basic route discovery principles used by the routing protocols that are discussed in the following chapters. We start by expanding our understanding of routing domains by examining autonomous systems. Next, interior and exterior gateway protocols are defined, followed by an explanation of distance-vector and link state metric operations. The chapter concludes with several examples of how networks advertise addresses to each and how they rely on each other to recover from errors and failures.
