INTERWORKING THE LAN AND WAN PROTOCOL STACKS

Figure 2-2 shows the relationships of the LAN and WAN protocol stacks. The salient aspect of this figure for this discussion is to note that the LAN protocols (Ethernet, in this example, at the physical and data link layers) do not operate on the point-to-point local loop. The point-to-point protocol (PPP) operates at the data link layer on this loop.
