FORWARDING AND ROUTING
Chapter 3 explains the major responsibilities of internetworking units, such as bridges and routers. For this introduction, two protocols are employed by these machines: (a) one protocol (say, protocol a) relays packets from a source user to a destination user, and (b) the other protocol (say, protocol b) finds a route for the packets to travel from the source to the destination. Unfortunately, several terms are used to describe these two types of protocols, and the terms themselves are not models of clarity. Nonetheless, we must deal with them. Figure 1-5 is used to explain these terms.
