MULTIPLE ROUTING PROTOCOLS

In most routing domains, more than one routing protocol is used. Several reasons exist for the use of multiple routing protocols. One reason is the simple fact that the art and science of route management continues to be improved with the resultant implementation of new protocols. Yet older systems still must use the legacy protocols.

Another reason is that some of the routing protocols have been developed by vendors, others by standards groups, and no clear “winner” has emerged among these systems. Therefore, it is not unusual for one network to support one type of routing protocol, and another network to support a different one.
