THE OSI AND INTERNET PROTOCOL STACKS

Figure A-11 and Table A-2 compare the OSI Model protocol stacks and the Internet protocol stacks. The Internet designers did not intend the Internet architecture to be a model. Rather, the protocols were designed and written to solve specific problems. On the other hand, OSI has developed to serve as a model for the development of communications systems. In addition, several of the layers contain protocols as well.
