Developing a Troubleshooting Routine

Troubleshooting techniques vary significantly from one network engineer to another. They are part science and part artistry. A good network engineer can simultaneously think in a linear fashion (following a logical progression of an event from start to finish) and in a lateral fashion (considering events not directly related to the problem at hand but possibly having an effect).

In general, there is no one correct way to determine the root cause of a problem. However, there are a few guidelines you can follow:
