Dissimilar Routing Protocols

Routers use routing protocols to calculate routes, share network topology information, and identify optimal next-hops for any given datagram. These protocols are completely transparent to the end systems in a network. Therefore, solving incompatibilities between them may not be as large or vexing a challenge as with routed protocols.

Internetworking two (or more) networks that use dissimilar routing protocols may be accomplished in three different ways:

  • Integrated routing protocols

  • Redundant routing protocols

  • Redistributing route information

The merits and implications of each of these potential solutions are examined throughout the remainder of this chapter.
