RIP-2's New Features

The following four features are the most significant new features added to RIP-2:

  • Authentication of the transmitting RIP-2 node to other RIP-2 nodes

  • Subnet masks

  • Next hop IP addresses

  • Multicasting RIP-2 messages

Together, these changes represented a significant increase in the sophistication and capability of RIP-2 over RIP, without a commensurate decrease in its usability, manageability, or ease of implementation. There were other features as well, including enhanced Management Information Blocks (MIBs) and support for tagging external routes, but these held relatively minor implications for the operational functionality of a RIP-2 network.
