Summary

Routers are uniquely capable of interconnecting LAN and WAN facilities. This is the function for which they were originally designed. Supporting this capability necessitates supporting a very wide variety of both LAN and WAN transmission facilities. This chapter provides a mere overview of some of the more common of these facilities, as well as an introduction to some of the industry and national standards that define these facilities.
