One of the router's most important capabilities is the interconnection of virtually any combination of different LAN and WAN technologies. As demonstrated in Part I, "Internetworking Fundamentals," LANs and WANs differ significantly from one another. Although a detailed examination of the myriad LAN and WAN technologies is beyond the scope of this book, a review of their "speeds and feeds" is pertinent to understanding exactly what a router can do.
