Part II. IP and Today’s Cellular Network

Chapter 4. An IP Refresher

The transition of wireless infrastructures to an IP-based packet transport requires a basic understanding of the IP protocols. The goal of this chapter is to provide the wireless network architect with a framework for making decisions about how to leverage IP to enhance mobile wireless connectivity. The chapter covers the basics of IP routing protocols, switching methods associated with IP, and transport protocols provided by IP. The relationship between the IP protocols and the wireless protocols is emphasized to demonstrate the benefits of transitioning to an IP-based infrastructure.
