How to do it...

The following are the steps:

  1. The firmware that we will use in this case is firmware by D-Link, the DIR-300 router. In order to extract the filesystem from the firmware, instead of using Binwalk, we will use the extract-firmware.sh script located in the FMK directory, as follows:
./extract-firmware.sh Dlink_firmware.bin  

Once we have extracted the firmware, it will contain a new directory for us including the folders rootfs, image_parts, and logs. For most of our backdooring and firmware modification purposes, we will only be concerned with the rootfs folder.
