In Chapter 4, “Connecting Smart Objects,” you learned about the important considerations in creating an IoT network and common protocols employed by smart objects to access and communicate with a network. Chapter 4 focuses on connectivity at Layer 1 (PHY) and Layer 2 (MAC). In this chapter, we move up the protocol stack and extend the conversation to network layer connectivity, which is commonly referred to as Layer 3.
