Concluding Thoughts

In the United States, renewable energy is 8 percent of the total energy matrix consisting of solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and hydroelectric. To date, geothermal power plants are operating in six U.S. states: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, and Utah. Geothermal represents 5 percent of the total U.S. renewable energy consumption which means, at the present, it is a very small portion of the U.S. energy matrix.

The USGS has quantified electric power generation potential in several U.S. geothermal systems. Its estimate is 9,057 MWe of generation capacity distributed over 13 states.
