U.S. Safety and Regulation

There is no doubt that drilling safety is of considerable importance to oil and gas producers, regulators, and the public at large. In many countries, increased regulation has now become an integral part of the offshore drilling industry. In addition, there are new levels of complexity and uncertainly associated with offshore drilling, particularly in the United States. As a result of the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, the former U.S. Bureau of Minerals Management Service was restructured and became the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEMRE) under the auspices of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
