Nuclear Quagmire

Electricity generated by nuclear energy is an industry encased in regulatory and cost complexities that we identify and analyze in this chapter. We will review issues behind nuclear energy as a fuel source, the future of nuclear energy, and its current status as an investment opportunity.

Nuclear generation plants utilize nuclear fission, a process of splitting apart big atoms into smaller atoms, to produce electricity. The fuel that is used to produce electricity is uranium 235. According to the Department of Energy (DOE), uranium is a rare, non-renewable metal found in rocks primarily in the western United States, that it requires processing before it becomes suitable as a fuel for nuclear reactors.
