The Quarterly Earnings Disconnect

Every quarter, we wait for the much-awaited earnings call, only to find several stock issues do not meet analyst's forecasts. Why do some energy stocks lag the rest of the market? While I appreciate the importance of quarterly earnings per share, I prefer to take the long-term view in the energy sector. This chapter reviews some of the more common issues associated with quarterly earnings, keeping in mind that nothing really transpires in a quarter in the energy sector. Therein lays the irony.
