Do you ever look through those newspaper columns headed Recent Wills? I admit I do. And I bet I’m not alone.

One of the interests is seeing how much money the newly deceased but dearly beloved left behind and whether it all went to the local home for stray moggies. But the real fascination, for me at least, is trying to imagine how people who feature in the wills sections made their money. A substantial number of people made theirs from shares, often doing little more than just buying mainstream equities when they could afford them and leaving them to grow. It was a policy of benign neglect.
