This chapter introduces the reader to the various tools needed to protect the Internet investigator’s computer system during the course of their activities. This includes how to set up the computer, the various utilities available to the investigator to secure the computer, and methods to test that security. Firewalls, anti-malware, encryption, and wiping tools will be discussed, including some vendor suggestions. General computer security fundamentals are stressed, such as installing and keeping protective utilities up to date, as well as patches for operating systems and investigative tools.
