Some Imaging Applications Based on Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar

In this chapter, some of the recent imaging applications based on inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging methodology are presented. As the conventional ISAR imaging algorithm is based on the assumption that the transmitter and the receiver are situated at the far field of the target, we will show in this chapter that it is also possible to form radar images of an object of interest if the transmitter or both the transmitter and the receiver are at the near field of the target.

As thoroughly discussed in the previous chapters, an ISAR image displays the amplitudes and the locations of the different scattering mechanisms from the target (or the platform). If we look at the ISAR image from the physical cause-and-effect point of view, an ISAR image can be regarded as the far-field electromagnetic (EM) wave interaction between the transmitter and the receiver over the target. In a similar manner, it may also be possible to form the radar image for other types of interactions such as near-field-to-far-field interaction or near-field-to-near-field interaction. The radar images of such scenarios can be successfully imaged using an analogy with the conventional ISAR imaging concept.
