Chapter 9

Introduction to Field-Effect Transistors (FETs) and Amplifiers

Abstract

We next take a detour from the world of bipolar transistors and enter the world of field-effect transistors. The basic signal metal oxide–semiconductor (MOS) structure is discussed, followed by a discussion of metal oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor amplifiers. The incremental model of the MOS transistor is shown, and it is used in a design example where gain and bandwidth are calculated for an MOS amplifier. We then finish with the junction field-effect transistor (JFET) and several examples of JFET amplifiers.
