Signalling systems and confirmed alarms

This chapter provides the reader with an understanding of the three different types of signalling available, namely audible, visual or remote. It also helps the reader appreciate the alarm confirmation techniques that are currently in force.

In the first instance signalling may be audible using sounders. It is known traditionally as local signalling (bells only). The technique is often complemented with visual signalling using xenon strobes or beacons. Remote signalling if installed is performed to a point remote to the protected area by means of a hardwired, a wirefree link or a combination technique employing more than one technology.
