This chapter discusses the economics of defect removal. Defect removal is an economic issue because many defect-removal decisions concern trade-offs between cost, schedule, and quality. While product quality must always be a high priority, most projects have schedule and cost constraints. Thus, the relative costs of removing defects during development, the impact of any remaining defects on the customer, and the resulting customer support costs are important issues in software development.
