It’s a warm May night, 2010, in the tiny hamlet of Marlboro, New York, 70 miles north of New York City in the scenic Hudson Valley. Inside Falcon Music & Art, on Route 9W, jazz musician Julian Lage is winding down his set.

As the last note fades, the audience leaps to its feet, clapping and shouting. Lage acknowledges the ovation with grace and gratitude, the sweat showing on his beaming face.
