In this chapter we will illustrate the general methods of conformal field theory given in chapter 8. This will include the theory of a free boson and also that of a free fermion. We then explain how such systems occurred when we quantised the bosonic string and superstring in earlier chapters. This allows us to give a general procedure for constructing string theories using conformal field techniques. Finally, using a very special free field which possesses what is known as a background charge we give a method of explicitly constructing all the correlation functions of any of the minimal models.
