In this chapter, we will discuss the classical bosonic string. As the string moves through space-time, it sweeps out a two-dimensional world sheet. By analogy with the point particle, we will take the string action to be the area of the world sheet swept out [2.1, 2.2]. From this action we will derive the equations of motion for the string. In preparation for its quantisation in the next chapter we will describe the string in terms of new variables.
