Chapter 4

Electromagnetics

Abstract

This chapter defines the basic laws of electric and magnetic field creation and the forces that are created by those fields. Ampere's and Faraday's laws are described. The emphasis is on the integral form of the governing equations and their significance to applications is discussed. Maxwell's equations are defined and their relationships to currents and force generation in plasmas are discussed. Gas discharges in direct current and high-frequency configurations are described. The pinch discharge formation and compression effects are analyzed, and the operation of magnetic field probes is described.
