Modes and Hybridization

Abstract

Chapter 2 explains that when light is captured, it can reside in a number of different states or modes: radiation modes, trapped traveling modes (guided modes and Bloch modes), and trapped localized modes (Mie modes and plasmonic modes) as well as in hybridizations of these. Light trapping may be thought of as the populating of some or all of these various modes with photons. In a successful design, the trapped photons in these modes are principally located in the absorber of the structure where they are converted into charge carriers or excitons.
