If you work in the field of nutrition and dietetics, you will sooner rather than later be asked, “What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?” The answer is that all dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians. In fact, in some states the term nutritionist means “nothing”—anyone can go around touting her- or himself as a nutritionist. The general public is constantly seeking nutrition advice and oftentimes not from the most reputable of sources. This chapter seeks to highlight the differences in nutrition credentials to raise the awareness about sources of reliable nutrition information.
