Materials selection for aerospace

25.1 Introduction

The process of selecting materials to be used in the airframe and engine is an important event in the design of aircraft. The material used can be just as important as the design itself; there is little point creating a well-designed structural or engine component if the material is unsuitable. The key objective of materials selection is to identify the material that is best suited to meet the design requirements of an aircraft component.
