Fracture toughness properties of aerospace materials

19.1 Introduction

High resistance to fracture is essential to ensure high damage tolerance for the materials used in aircraft structures and engines. In chapter 18 it was explained that an important way to increase the damage tolerance is by raising the fracture toughness. The fracture toughness of materials is defined by two related properties: critical stress intensity factor Kc and critical strain energy release rate Gc.
