Microsoft Azure SQL Database was one of the first cloud services to offer a secure, robust, and flexible database platform to host applications of all types and sizes. When it was introduced, SQL Database had only a small subset of the features available in the SQL Server database engine. With the introduction of version V12 and features such as elastic database pools, SQL Database is now an enterprise-class platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering.
