NixOS is a very different Linux distro from those you’ve seen up to now. In fact, it is a state of the art distribution, ahead of everything. It's still not mature, it’s continuing to evolve, it has still its quirks, and nobody can say if its bleeding edge technology is going to be adopted as the future of Linux. There are a few other proposals (like GuixSD, GoboLinux, and Qubes) that are also trying to make a difference and exploring new horizons. I include NixOS because it has very interesting concepts.
