Buffering—Plan B
ArcGIS provides you the ability to slide easily from one data model to another. Let’s take advantage of the fact that you created vector buffers of both sewers and streams when you solved the Wildcat Boat problem in the last chapter.
____ 26. Start ArcMap with a Blank Map. Add Streams_buf from
___IGIS-Arc\YourInitials\Wildcat_Boat_Data\Wildcat_Boat.mdb\Area_Features
to the map. Look at the Attribute Table. You should see 12 records. In each record the value of the field NoBuild will be 20, indicating the number of meters adjavent to the stream where building is not allowed. This number will become zone value in the attribute table of the raster you are about to build.
____ 27. Using the tool Polygon_to_Raster
(where is it? ______________________________________),
start to make a new raster named Streams_buf_rr2m from the Streams_buf feature class. The location you want to put the raster in is
___IGIS-Arc_YourInitials\Spatial_Analyst_Data\WC_Boat_SA\Wildcat_Boat_SA.mdb.
Make the cell size 2.0 and the Value field NoBuild. Click OK.
____ 28. The raster will be added to the map. Check out the raster’s attribute table. Notice the Value field. It will indicate “20”. What is count? ________. Zoom way in on the northwest stream. There is a raster beneath the Streams_buf layer. Make the symbol for Streams_buf Hollow or No Color to see that the raster conforms (mostly) to Streams_buf.
