Predicting the future of technological developments has always been a notoriously risky occupation. Internet technologies could be argued to be one of the most unpredictable areas of all, due to the ease and frequency with which new standards and software vendors continue to appear on the market.
Those areas that market analysts are confident will continue to grow are those closely related to e-commerce strategies. For instance, Datamonitor (1999) predicts that e-business Intranet consultancy services in Europe will grow from its current market value of $728 million to $1.5 billion by 2003 as a direct result of extending the Intranet [extranet] to their suppliers and strategic partners.
