Interviewing Promotion Candidates

Interviewing candidates for a job promotion shares certain similarities with the process for interviewing candidates for other open positions— and has certain differences.

Similarities

As in interviewing other candidates, the interview process for a job promotion should begin with a completed Competency Assessment Worksheet. While it is always important that there is an accurate position description, these are even more critical when interviewing a candidate for a job promotion. There is nothing more embarrassing to a manager interviewing a candidate for a promotion only to learn later that the position description he or she used was so old that it was, in effect, for an entirely different job.
