Chapter 12. Communicating via Instant Messaging and Chat
If you want to have a conversation with someone, what is the best way to go about it? The traditional method has been the telephone call, but many people resent getting phone calls because they interrupt whatever they are currently doing.
To avoid the interruption problem you might decide to use e-mail, instead. However, it is difficult to have a real conversation over e-mail because it may take minutes or even hours between responses.
To get the immediate give-and-take of a proper conversation without interrupting the other person, you need to use either instant messaging or chat. This chapter introduces you to these systems.
