Part I. Internet Telephony Fundamentals

To start the book off, we thought it would be a good idea to walk you through the benefits and tradeoffs of using an Internet-based telephone system, sometimes referred to as Voice over IP (VoIP), or broadband phone service.

To understand the benefits at a deeper level, we begin this section with a short primer on the public telephone system that you have probably used your entire life. There’s nothing too technical here, just a quick look into the simple, yet well-designed communication system that has been in operation for nearly 100 years.
