Chapter 10. Connecting the VoIP Equipment

This chapter discusses how to connect VoIP service in your home. You have several different possibilities. We don’t go through all of them, but spend some time on a couple of the most common types.

Starting Point

As a starting point (and so we can keep this book to a reasonable length), we need to make the following assumptions:

  • You already have a high-speed broadband Internet service installed and working.

  • The broadband service has a minimum of 128 kbps uplink bandwidth (from your home to the broadband provider), and preferably higher (such as 256 or 284 kbps).
