Chapter 2. A Bit of History
The Internet’s origins stretch back to the late 1960s, when the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense funded a project for the investigation of packet-switching[1] technologies. This gave birth to the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), one of the first packet-switched networks ever. This chapter overviews the history of the Internet, explains how SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) was born, and positions it in the historical context of other technologies that have also been used to deliver realtime IP (Internet Protocol) communication services.
