Managing Log Files

With the 50 or so sites that are currently on one of our Web servers, log file management has become an issue. If the files are not moved off the hard drive in a timely manner, new log files will stop being generated until more disk space is made available. To avoid missing days or losing files, a simple plan can be implemented.

At the beginning of each new month, move the previous month's log files from the production Web server to a storage location. I suggest using a zip utility to reduce their size, and then storing the smaller files on a backup drive, such as a Jaz or Zip disk, or a backup tape.
