Microsoft SQL Server versus Access

The big debate in Web-based database connectivity is when to use a Microsoft SQL Server database versus a Microsoft Access database. In most cases, the Web developer will already know which one he wants to use. But if the Web developer is unsure, ask some of the following questions:

  • Are you already familiar with SQL Server and its query tools? If not, then creating SQL tables by submitting queries to the server or bulk-loading data into the tables may be too complex.

  • How many Web users do you expect to generate database queries at any moment? If the answer is more than about 25, then the Web application will probably require a SQL Server database.
